very similar in appearance to Verbesina alternifolia. V. alternifolia has alternate leaves that are more lance-shaped, and usually has more than 2 ray florets per head, while V. occidentalis has opposite leaves that are more oval, and only 1 or 2 (sometimes 3) ray florets per head
